Aleš: Oh, I have a splitting headache!
Peter: Since when?
Aleš: Since yesterday.
Peter: What happened?
Aleš: Actually, nothing yet. This is probably from stress. Soon my current employment contract expires and tomorrow I have an interview for a new job. I’m being offered a position that I like even more than the current one, but it also brings more responsibility. However, the financial aspect doesn’t reflect that at all.
Peter: Why don’t you ask for – or at least “suggest” – a change, such as a more appropriate salary?
Aleš: Well, I don’t know…
Peter: Are you afraid of something?
Aleš: I am, actually: that we won’t reach an agreement. Then I would be jobless and wouldn’t have any income.
Then we dug deeper and found the following:
- the bills and loans would have to be paid by his wife, but they already had other plans, which would then need to be changed;
- he does not feel good if things are not settled;
- he could not function without money;
- he and his wife would start fighting, divorce would follow, the family would fall apart, and he would feel lonely;
- he had felt like that before, when his family was in a financial crisis, and the very first time he had felt that way was when he was a child because his parents were away quite a lot and the relationships in the family were not good, especially with his mother.
And what were the consequences of the elimination of this childhood trauma? The headache subsided and eventually vanished, and the interview went as he had hoped, without any complications. Also, of course, he has been happy at his new workplace for several months already. Cooool …
